Auditory Demonstrations in Acoustics and Hearing Conservation is a compact disc
that contains a series of audio demonstrations that illustrate fundamental concepts in
acoustics (e.g., frequency, sound level, tonal and broadband noise sources, A-weighting,
octave band filtering, audiometric test frequencies, and simulated hearing loss
demonstrations). The disc was produced for the Glenn Research Center by David Nelson
and Ashton Taylor of Hoover & Keith, Inc..
The disc includes material appropriate for classroom use as well as broadband noise for
fitting hearing protectors, and industrial noise samples recorded at NASA Glenn
Research Center by Telarc International Corporation. These GRC noises were used to
produce sound effects for Telarc's CD Symphonic Star Trek CD#80383 (1996). To listen
to a couple of the recorded sound effects visit the Public Affairs Office Web Page.
A second demonstration disc, Auditory Demonstrations
II: Challenges to Speech Communication and Music Listening, has been produced to illustrate the impact of
acoustical conditions and hearing loss on everyday listening situations. The disc also
includes recordings of several styles of music that have been modified to demonstrate
auditory changes due to progressive noise-related hearing loss.
