On-Orbit communications between astronaut crew members and mission control are superimposed against a sequence of background noise levels that are used as design criteria for various types of construction. The relative appropriateness of the background noise levels for the activity taking place can be illustrated by portraying the communication sequence as taking place in each of the venues sequentially. The animated vignette demonstrates the increasing difficulty in understanding the dialog as background levels increase. Graphic displays of numerical metrics signal the changes between between background NC levels. From track 3 of the Animated Auditory Demonstrations II collection.

The NASA Glenn Research Center Acoustical Testing Laboratory has produced this collection of animated auditory demonstrations to illustrate the impact of acoustical conditions and hearing loss on everyday listening situations, including the enjoyment of various styles of music. This collection consists of visually animated versions of selected audio tracks from NASA's Auditory Demonstrations II: Challenges in Speech Communication and Music Listening. Each animation on this disc provides a visual roadmap that allows the listener to easily identify audible but subtle changes in the auditory signal, along with the numerical metrics that quantify the changing technical parameters. Designed to support training and advocacy, the animations are presented in an entertaining visual context that helps to reinforce the message of each demonstration. They have been incorporated into Microsoft® PowerPoint® Presentation files and can be run on either Windows or Macintosh systems within PowerPoint® or using Windows Media® Player or QuickTime®.
